Laurel Mountain State Park occupies a 493-acre site on Laurel Mountain in southwestern Pennsylvania near Jennerstown. It began in 1939 as a private ski area opened by General Richard K. Mellon for his club and was among Pennsylvania’s earliest ski areas. After a temporary World War II closure, it gained prominence as the Ski Capital of Pennsylvania. Mellon leased the land to the state in 1963 and donated it in 1964, creating the state park. Unlike most state parks, it remained focused on downhill skiing for decades, later closing in 2005 before Seven Springs Mountain Resort acquired the ski assets and arranged to restore and operate the slopes.
