In Sackets Harbor, New York, the Seaway Trail Discovery Center introduces the culture and heritage of the Great Lakes Seaway Trail and the communities along its 504-mile route through mostly New York and a small part of Pennsylvania. Housed in the historic Union Hotel and opened in July 2000 under the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Preservation, it presents the state’s only scenic byway through exhibits on regional history, architecture, and natural resources. Its major themes include 27 historic lighthouses, local War of 1812 fighting, notable residents, agricultural heritage, and heritage tourism’s role in shaping regional identity.
