Hogsheads were used to transport tobacco to ports for overseas shipment. Workers rolled them or oxen drew them several miles to their destinations, and a fully loaded hogshead could weigh hundreds of pounds. Nearby Ox Road and Rolling Road acquired their names from the many hogsheads transported along those routes centuries ago.
