A yellow fever epidemic struck from August to November 1878, bringing 462 cases and 150 deaths. Dr. Luke Blackburn, later governor of Kentucky from 1879 to 1883, together with local and visiting doctors, rendered heroic services during the outbreak in Hickman, Kentucky.
