At Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in San Antonio, Texas, the Military Working Dog Teams National Monument honors military dog handlers, dogs, and veterinary support personnel from the Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard who have served in the Department of Defense program since World War II. Dedicated in 2013 at the program's longtime headquarters and training center, it features bronze sculptures of a modern handler and four service dog breeds, a history wall, service flagpoles, and the "Not Forgotten Fountain," inspired by Vietnam veteran John C. Burnam. The project grew from Burnam's long campaign and became a national memorial and symbolic homecoming for generations of war dogs and their handlers.
