Confederate Memorial Park in Mountain Creek near Marbury preserves Alabama’s only official home for Confederate veterans. Founded by Jefferson Manly Falkner in 1901 and supported by land he donated in 1902, the home sheltered disabled or impoverished former Confederate soldiers, their wives, and later widows. At its peak from 1914 to 1918, 104 veterans and 19 widows lived in a community with cottages, a hospital, farm buildings, and modern utilities. The home closed in 1939 after the last veteran died in 1934. Established as a state park in 1964, the site includes cemeteries, a museum, and churches, while also remaining part of debate over Civil War memory and public funding.
