Originally a pioneer cemetery where many early residents were buried, this site became in 1866 a place where returned Confederate soldiers under the leadership of Maj. William Hume and David Lawrence collected and reinterred the bodies of soldiers who had fallen at isolated places in the Beech Grove-Hoover's Gap engagement of June 24-26, 1863.
