The Museum of Chincoteague Island preserves the people, culture, and heritage of Chincoteague through exhibits spanning from prehistoric times to the present. Its collections connect island life to the surrounding waters and coast, highlighting the oyster industry, maritime history, and the work of watermen, lighthouse keepers, and rescuers of shipwreck victims. Notable artifacts include the first-order Fresnel lens from Assateague Light and a sixth-order lens from Fort Washington Light. It is also closely linked to Chincoteague’s famous ponies, holding Misty and her foal Stormy and, in 2023, acquiring the Beebe Ranch for preservation and use as a visitors center.
