Mandated by Indiana's 1836 Internal Improvement Act, construction of the Madison and Indianapolis Railroad began in Madison in 1836. It was completed along this site in 1843, and Elizabethtown was platted in 1845 as a result of the railroad. The line was completed to Indianapolis in 1847, linking the Ohio River and the interior of the state.
