Lake Brownwood State Park occupies 537.5 acres along Lake Brownwood in central Texas and emerged from Brown County’s effort to control flooding on Pecan Bayou. After voters created the Brown County Water Improvement District in 1926, the dam and reservoir were completed in 1932, and the state acquired park land in 1933. Development began through Civil Works Administration programs and continued under the Civilian Conservation Corps, whose companies built much of the park’s lasting stone infrastructure. Opened in 1938, the park also served during World War II as a military recreation area for Camp Bowie soldiers. Its lake and shoreline now support varied wildlife, birdlife, and fishing.
