Wilbur and Orville Wright lived and worked here during their 1901, 1902, and 1903 late-summer and autumn testing sessions. Their 1903 camp is depicted by reconstructed buildings. Each year, the brothers refined their camp. In 1901, they built a wooden hangar-workshop for their glider and lived in a tent. They welcomed friends to their Outer Banks home, and those friends often helped with glider tests, but windy conditions made tent life difficult. In 1902, they moved their living quarters into the hangar-workshop, though it was cramped. In 1903, needing more space for their flyer, they built a large hangar that provided room to assemble it after shipping the flyer in pieces from their Dayton, Ohio, bike shop.
