German-born painter Carl Brandt (1831-1905) came to Hastings in the 1860s and settled in a Greek revival house on the western edge of the Chrystie estate. He spent his last years commuting between Hastings and Savannah, Georgia, where he directed the Telfair Academy. A circa 1900 photograph may show Brandt sitting in a rocking chair, and around 1905 Gus Wagner, a Warburton Avenue news dealer and bicycle repairman, was photographed in his sleigh in front of the house.
