Burroughs School in Conway, South Carolina, developed in stages between 1905 and 1923 from an elementary school into a larger complex, and its architecture preserves that growth. The earliest section features eleven-bay portions and a one-story hip-roof porch supported by six Ionic columns with Scamozzi capitals. Additions around 1915 and in 1923 brought more classrooms and an auditorium, creating the form largely seen today. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, the former school took on a new public role in 2014 as the home of the Horry County Museum, which interprets the county’s history, prehistory, and natural history through varied exhibits.
