The Flingkei Book Club, the Pinellas County expansion of a book club founded in Japan in 1962 by Alden Matthews, provided funding for a Wind Phone as a tribute to him and to four members who died within that year: Ben Griffith, Mary Griffith, Sallie Parks, and Judy McSwine, in the hope that many people would find comfort in sharing words and thoughts with departed loved ones in the wind phone way. Inspired by Itaru Sasaki's in Otsuchi, Japan, the Wind Phone was placed in October 2023 in recognition of the fortieth anniversary of the founding of the Palm Harbor Historical Society and to honor all who contribute to preserving and celebrating cultural history at Palm Harbor Museum. A Japanese torii gate there symbolizes the transition from the normal everyday world to the sacred, where passing through it enters the realm of the gods, known as kami, spirits of nature such as wind, rain, trees, and ocean. Donations of materials came from volunteers, with special thanks to Aaron Scharrer Fortner for design skill and labor.
