Utsayantha Mountain, a 3,209-foot peak in New York’s Catskills near Stamford, is tied to a local tradition about Utsayantha, said to be the daughter of Lenape chief Ubiwacha, whose death is linked to nearby Utsayantha Lake. A grave found on the mountain in 1862 was once thought to be hers, but this was never proven. The summit became a public viewpoint, and in 1889 part of the mountaintop was bought, improved with an observation house, and given to the town as a park. A Civilian Conservation Corps fire tower added in 1934 served until 1989, was later restored, and remains open to the public.
