Soon after Riley and Ella Mays moved with their 12 children to Robstown in 1917, they and the Ira Collier family helped organize this congregation. Its first worship service was held in September 1918 in a Robstown school building, and it was named Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. During its formative years, the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Association provided pastors, and the Rev. C. B. Baycoat became the first minister called by the congregation, preaching two Sundays each month. As new families joined, a Sunday school was organized and the first sanctuary was built in 1930. By 1950, membership had grown enough to require a full-time pastor, and the Rev. D. L. Everett was called to serve in that role. During his tenure, a new building was completed. In the latter half of the 20th century, ordained and lay leadership continued to inspire growth and development, including construction of a third building in 1965 and the purchase and renovation of the Phyllis Wheatley School as an activity center. Throughout its history, Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church has emphasized outreach, education, and community assistance, and it remains an important part of Robstown's cultural heritage.
