Pennsylvania’s official history museum in downtown Harrisburg preserves and presents the Commonwealth’s history and culture through permanent collections, changing exhibitions, and a multimedia planetarium. Created in 1905 after Governor Samuel W. Pennypacker approved legislation to preserve objects tied to the state’s natural and human history, it received startup funding that same year, joined the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission in 1945, and moved to its current round Capitol Complex building in 1964. Its more than three million objects, including major Civil War and industrial history holdings, help tell Pennsylvania’s story from prehistoric times to the present.
