Elk Mountain
Nature
Elk Mountain is a 4,191-foot peak in Lake County, Northern California, within the Coast Ranges and Mendocino National Forest. About 10 miles north of Upper Lake, near the meeting of the east and west forks of Middle Creek, its drainage ultimately reaches the Sacramento River. Although not one of the region's highest summits, it has 599 feet of prominence and lies 1.69 miles from Horse Mountain, the nearest higher peak. Elk Mountain Road, the dirt National Forest Route M1, runs about 1 kilometer east of the summit and provides a main access route through this part of the forest. The mountain is also a recreation site for hang-gliding and paragliding.
