Haberdeventure, the Maryland home and estate of Thomas Stone, preserves the life and setting of one of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence. Stone bought the property in 1770 and expanded his plans for the house after his father’s death brought younger siblings into his household. By the 1780s, the plantation probably supported about 25 to 35 people, including enslaved people, and had grown substantially by Stone’s death in 1787. Stone was buried in the family cemetery beside the house. Later restoration preserved its notable Flemish-bond brickwork and established the site as a place to explore Stone’s life and the broader history of American independence.
