A. P. Carter built this general store in the mid-1940s after he was no longer performing or recording. In 1974, his daughter Janette transformed it into a concert venue where she and other musicians gave concerts, and her Saturday night shows drew such crowds that they outgrew the store by 1976. After moving the concerts to the new Fold next door, Janette converted the store into a museum to display many objects from the family's collection. Designated a state historic landmark in 1976 and a national historic landmark in 1985, the store still looks as it did when A. P. built it.
