Robert Hogue, born in 1846, migrated from Pennsylvania to Pipestone Township with his family in 1854. At age seventeen, he began teaching in a local school. He attended Adrian College and later graduated from the University of Michigan before resuming teaching in Berrien County. Soon after purchasing 170 acres of land in 1874, he married Mary Rector. In the late nineteenth century, the Hogues built the house, which was modernized around 1940 but retains many Victorian details. Robert Hogue also held several township offices and served as postmaster and justice of the peace.
