At Kessler's Cross Lanes, 5 miles east, on Aug. 26, 1861, and at Carnifex Ferry, 7 miles west, on Sept. 10, 1861, battles occurred between Confederates under Gen. J. B. Floyd and Union troops under Col. E. B. Tyler and Gen. W. S. Rosecrans.
