The Shepherd Brooks Estate in Medford, Massachusetts, is the city’s only major 19th-century estate to survive largely undeveloped. Created as a summer residence and gentleman’s farm for Shepherd Brooks, it centers on an 1880 Queen Anne manor house designed by Peabody and Stearns, with a nearby carriage barn, on an 82-acre property. After Clara Brooks’s death in 1939, the estate passed to city ownership and served veterans, nursing home residents, and mentally challenged adults. Local opposition to a cellphone tower in the 1990s spurred preservation efforts, leading to a 1998 restriction that permanently protected the manor, carriage house, and 50 acres from development.
