Chico Community Observatory in upper Bidwell Park is a free, nonprofit astronomy observatory in Chico, California, owned by the Kiwanis Club of Greater Chico and sustained by donations and volunteers. Opened in 2001, it became closely linked with Anita Johanna Ingrao, a longtime volunteer and co-director celebrated for inspiring children to learn astronomy. After her death from breast cancer in 2014, it was renamed in her honor. Its history also reflects the challenges of a small donation-funded institution, including recovery from a 2009 theft of solar panels and a 2017–2018 closure caused by mechanical failures, both overcome through community support.
