Augusta Museum of History
History
Founded in 1937 in downtown Augusta, Georgia, this museum preserves and presents the history of Augusta and the Central Savannah River Area and is the region’s only museum accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. Its exhibits span from prehistoric cultures to modern popular culture, including Stallings Island artifacts, slave-made pottery, transportation displays, railroad and banking materials, and medical history beginning with Augusta’s first hospital in 1818. Collections on James Brown, local entertainers, golf, broadcasting, and industry show Augusta as a crossroads of Native history, slavery, railroads, music, medicine, and sport.
