At the Battle of McDowell, 4,000 Federals were engaged and suffered 256 killed and wounded, while 2,500 Confederates were engaged and suffered 498 killed and wounded. Confederate officers killed included Captains Samuel Dawson, John K. Goldwire, William L. Furlow, William A. Massey, John McMillan, William H. Turpin, James W. Patterson, and James T. Woodward, all of the 12th Georgia Regiment; Colonel S.P. Gibbons of the 10th Virginia Regiment; Captain J. Whitmore of the 25th Virginia Regiment; Captain William Long of the 25th Virginia Regiment; Lieutenant Wm.H. Gregory of the 52nd Virginia Regiment; Lieutenant Charles E. Dyer of the 23rd Virginia Regiment; Lieutenant Samuel P. Dye of the 25th Virginia Regiment; Lieutenant C.G. Fletcher of the 37th Virginia Regiment; and Lieutenant John A. Carson of the 52nd Virginia Regiment.
