World's First Rodeo

On July 4, 1883, a block south of the Pecos Courthouse, what was regarded as the world's first rodeo grew out of claims by the NA, Lazy Y, and W ranches that each had the fastest steer ropers. Settlers in town for a Fourth of July picnic watched the contest, and the prizes were blue ribbons cut with a pocket knife from the new dress of a 4-year-old girl in the crowd. Morg Livingston of the NA won best roper, Trav Windham of the Lazy Y placed second, and other entrants included Howard Collier, Fate Beard, Jim Mannin, George Brookshire, John Chalk, Jeff Chism, Jim Livingston, Jim and Henry Slack, Brawley Oates, Henry Miller, and E.P. Stuckler.
