Locust Lake State Park in Schuylkill County centers on a fifty-two-acre lake within one thousand eighty-nine acres and now serves as a year-round destination for hiking, camping, boating, fishing, swimming, biking, hunting, and other outdoor recreation. The area passed from the Lenape to the Susquehannocks and then the Iroquois League of Five Nations. Though not well suited to mining, it was heavily reshaped by nineteenth-century logging and tanning, leaving much of the land cleared by the early twentieth century. Later owned by the Marchalonis Brothers as a fishing and picnic ground, the property was bought by Pennsylvania in 1966 and opened as a state park in 1972, transforming a once-industrial landscape into public recreation land.
