Named in 1982, the W.D. Nixon Bridge honors a dedicated public servant and ardent supporter of the construction of Richard B. Russell Dam who served as a member of the South Carolina House from 1949 to 1953 and also served as chairman of Abbeville County Council, mayor of Lowndesville, and county chairman of the Democratic Party.
