Clinch Ranger District Cluster
Nature
The Clinch Ranger District Cluster is a large protected natural landscape in southwestern Virginia within the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests, divided between sections along Pine Mountain and Powell Mountain. Recognized for rugged scenery and exceptional biodiversity, it includes wilderness areas and other wild tracts such as Stone Mountain Wilderness and the North Fork of the Pound. Its Alleghany Plateau terrain has been deeply cut by streams, most dramatically at the Russell Fork River gorge. Rich forests and watersheds support rare plants, salamanders, endangered freshwater mussels, and recovered wildlife. The area remains important for conservation because connected forest habitat helps sustain a diverse and resilient ecosystem.
