McLean House at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, was the site of the April 9, 1865, meeting where Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant agreed to surrender terms that signaled the collapse of Lee’s army. Built in 1848, the house had been a tavern before Wilmer McLean bought it in 1863 after leaving his Bull Run farm. The agreement allowed Confederate officers to keep side arms and private horses and let some enlisted men retain horses or mules. Afterward, the house became famous, was stripped of furnishings, later dismantled for a failed museum scheme, and was eventually reconstructed by the National Park Service and reopened in 1949.
