The Clinton Church of Christ began during World War II as families moved into Anderson County to work on the secret Manhattan Project and temporary dwellings spread across the landscape. Its first worship service was held in one of those homes on February 7, 1943, with six people present: Bonnie and Iva Grissom, O.B. Trammell and son Byron, and Robert and Ariel Waters. The congregation’s first preacher was S.F. Timmerman. It next met in an old union hall on Highway 25W, purchased in 1944, which was demolished and replaced with a new building on the same site three years later. By 1959 the congregation had outgrown that home, purchased property a short distance away at 500 North Main Street, and completed a new building there in 1964. It is thought to be the oldest congregation of the Church of Christ in Anderson County.
