Built in 1935 at the historic north entrance to Lassen Volcanic National Park from Lassen National Forest, this stone gateway stood along the original approach into the park before the highway intersection was rerouted. The park road, begun by the National Park Service and Bureau of Public Roads from 1925 through 1931 and continued by the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1933 to 1941, was among the first in national parks designed to lay lightly on the land, blending with the surrounding environment while offering views of notable scenery and geology. Maintained over the years, the original route still carries travelers through active geothermal areas, sub-alpine forests, mountain meadows, and lava fields.
