Fort Fairmount, also known as the Chain of Lakes post, was a substantial log stockade on the present Martin County court house grounds. It was built in September 1862 for defense against the Sioux and was garrisoned by volunteers and troops of the 25th Wisconsin. It was dedicated to the memory of the Civil War veterans by Womans Relief Corps No. 41 on May 30, 1925.
