On June 17 and 18, 1804, Lewis and Clark camped a few miles downstream to make oars from local timber. Near their camp was a river crossing used by Sacs, Ayauways (Iowas), and Sioux during their excursions against the Osage. On June 19, the explorers continued upstream past this spot.
