Mount Nitai
Nature
Mount Nitai in northern Israel rises west of the Sea of Galilee and, with nearby Mount Arbel, forms a dramatic cliff line visible from Capernaum. The Arbel Valley, also called Wadi Hamam, separates the two mountains. Archaeological remains on Mount Nitai’s eastern slope include Khirbet Wadi Hamam, where an ancient Jewish synagogue has been excavated, and some associate the site with the ancient town of Arbel. Ruins on the summit, including an ancient wall near a sheer cliff, are also identified with ancient Arbel. The mountain’s name preserves a link to Nittai of Arbela, and the site is valued for both its landscape and its long record of settlement.
