In 1802, on his rice plantation in nearby Rantowles, John Champneys hybridized the first rose in America. Champneys' Pink Cluster was a cross between the European Millers' White Musk rose (Rosa Moschata) and Parsons' Pink China rose (Old Blush). This new fragrant rose, with large clusters of small pink flowers, bloomed repeatedly. It became a sensation here and abroad.
