From mid July to mid August, 1777, General Burgoyne's army encamped in the area between here and Derby Park. During this time, over 7,000 soldiers were camped here at one time or another. They included members of the British 9th, 20th, 21st, 24th, 47th, 53d, and 62nd Regiments of Foot, a number of American Provincial Corps, members of the Royal Navy, and seven German regiments known as Hessians.
