The Wabash and Erie Canal, begun in 1832 and dedicated on July 4, 1843, at Fort Wayne, once flowed past this point. In its final phase, the canal extended 459 miles from Maumee Bay to Toledo, through New Havens southwestward to Layette, and then to the Ohio River at Evansville. It was abandoned in 1874, and the last boat was seen on the canal in 1882.
