During their upstream journey in 1805, Lewis and Clark traveled through this area in two groups. On his return journey in 1806, Clark's group passed through the Headwaters area on their way to the Yellowstone River. From south to north, sites in the Upper Missouri River area include Lewis and Clark campsites from July 25-29, 1805, and Clark campsites from July 24, 1805, July 13, 1806, along with the Missouri Headwaters State Park Boat Ramp, Fairweather Fishing Access Site, Toston Dam Boat Launch, and Toston Fishing Access Site.
