About one mile to the southeast stood the village of White Mound, which consisted of a general store and post office, cheese factory, blacksmith shop, saloon, and dance hall. Its post office existed from 1859 to 1919. Before granting that service, the federal government required the settlers to demonstrate a need for it, which they did by going to Spring Green once a week for a year at their own expense to obtain their mail. White Mound also became a station on several stagecoach lines, notably the Spring Green - Reedsburg line.
