Gunnison Chapel opened in 1926 to honor Dr. Almon Gunnison, the eighth president in St. Lawrence's history, whose 15 years at the helm from 1899-1914 brought tremendous growth to the college. Its neo-gothic design by architect Bertram Goodhue featured a spare interior and just two original stained glass windows. Between 1972 and 1982, 24 additional windows were added as gifts from alumni and other contributors. For over 90 years, the building has been a center of campus life, hosting church services, lectures, concerts, weddings, receptions, convocations, and SLU graduations. One of the most cherished St. Lawrence traditions is the daily ringing of the chapel bells at 5pm. to close each school day. Known as the Bacheller Memorial Chime, the bells were given by 20th century author and SLU alumnus Irving Bacheller.
