The two-story brick building southwest of here was built in 1924-25 to house Summerville High School, originally including the north hall and central auditorium, with the west and east wings added later. In 1969-70, Summerville High School moved to a new campus. In 1972, this site became Rollings Elementary and later Rollings Middle School of the Arts, named for former Summerville High School teacher and principal Richmond H. Rollings. John McKissick, born in Greenwood, S.C., attended Presbyterian College before beginning his coaching career in Clarkson, N.C. In 1952, he became head coach of the Summerville High School Green Wave football team. In 1987, Summerville High School's home field was named in his honor. In 1993, he became the winningest coach in the history of American football. By the time of his 2014 retirement, he had won 10 state championships and amassed a 621-155-13 record.
