Hartford was a thriving town in the 1830's, high on the west bank of the Auglaize, and it was expected to have a bright future because the new Miami and Erie Canal would one day serve it. But the canal passed two miles to the west, and after 1845 the buildings and streets gradually disappeared, leaving only the little cemetery to the east.
