Pinnacles National Forest in California existed only briefly. It was established as Pinnacles Forest Reserve on July 18, 1906, when a presidential proclamation set aside 14,108 acres, and on March 4, 1907, it became a national forest after Congress redesignated forest reserves. The separate name ended on July 1, 1908, when an executive order absorbed it into Monterey National Forest. The former lands now lie within Los Padres National Forest and Pinnacles National Park, whose protected status began in 1908 when Theodore Roosevelt first proclaimed Pinnacles National Monument.
