Red River National Wildlife Refuge in Louisiana was established in 2001 as a long-term preservation project along the Red River. Planned to cover about 50,000 acres of federal lands and waters over roughly 120 miles from Colfax in Grant Parish to the Arkansas state line, it is not a single tract but a refuge assembled gradually through land acquisition. Its four focus areas are Lower Cane River, Spanish Lake Lowlands, Bayou Pierre Floodplain, and Wardview. About 16,000 acres of the proposed 50,000 had been acquired, showing the refuge’s ongoing growth as a protected river corridor.
