Washington National Cathedral, formally the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul in the City and Episcopal Diocese of Washington, is a Neo-Gothic Episcopal cathedral in Washington, D.C., modeled on late fourteenth-century English Gothic architecture. Envisioned from the city’s earliest planning and formally organized in the 1890s, it was begun in 1907 and completed in 1990 after a long, privately funded construction campaign. As the seat of Episcopal leadership in Washington and a major national landmark, it has also come to serve as a de facto national church, hosting state funerals, memorial services, and inaugural prayer services while remaining an active place of worship and ongoing restoration.
