Le Sueur was named for Pierre Charles Le Sueur, a French explorer who passed the site in 1700. The town on the old Red River trail included two towns, Le Sueur and Le Sueur City, which were laid out in 1852-53 on Prairie Le Fleche about a mile apart. They were consolidated and incorporated by legislative act in 1867.
