Jesse N. Smith built this two-story adobe house in Parowan between June 1856 and March 1858 after helping settle the community in 1851. Noted as Utah’s oldest adobe structure and once considered the oldest surviving house in southern Utah, it preserves the materials and methods of early settlement through its use of quarried rock, baked adobe, and hewed timber. Originally a four-room residence later enlarged by a rear addition, it passed from Smith to William Bentley in 1879, stood vacant for years, and was restored from 1967 to 1969 after its purchase by the Jesse N. Smith Family Association in 1962. By 2017 it operated as a museum.
