On November 23, 1937, citizens of Southbury met in this church for a special town meeting to create a zoning commission to prevent the German-American Bund, a pro-Nazi organization, from establishing Camp General von Steuben in the Kettletown area as the largest Bund camp in America. At a second meeting, residents adopted a resolution against the Bund with unanimous support. Reverend M. Edgar N. Lindsay, pastor of South Britain Congregational Church, was instrumental in leading the town in denouncing the Bund and declared Nazism to be "un-Christian, un-American and an insidious menace." After these actions by Southbury residents, the Bund abandoned the campsite and never returned, and Southbury was the only town in America known to take such action.
